Inscribed to Princess Beatrice (1857-1944), Queen Victoria's youngest child, from the author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-98) who wrote under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll: "Presented to / Her Royal Highness / The Princess Beatrice / by / Her obedient servant / the Author." The book contains the bookplate used by Princess Beatrice between 1857 and 1885.
The illustrations are those produced by Tenniel for the original English edition of 1865. This copy of the German translation was presented by the author to Princess Beatrice, youngest daughter of Queen Victoria, and contains her bookplate. This takes the form of her arms as a maiden lady, on a lozenge, her arms being the Royal Arms with an inescutcheon of Saxony (her father’s arms), and a label of three points, charged on the centre one with a heart and on the outer two with roses.
There is a widely-known story that Queen Victoria was so enchanted by Alice’s adventures in Wonderland, that she asked the author, whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, for a copy of his next book, only to find that that was a dull tome of mathematics! There is, however, no such volume in the Royal Library, nor any correspondence in the Royal Archives to substantiate this tale.
